The 14th Shamar Rinpoche was born in 1952. In the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism he is the most important lineage holder after Karmapa. In many of the sutras, he is presented as the manifestation of Amitabha Buddha as Karmapa has been considered the manifestation of Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of compassion.

Many successive Karmapas have recognized the Shamarpas as an identical manifestation of themselves and the 3rd Karmapa offered to Shamarpa a Red Hat, the exact reproduction of his own Black Hat as a sign of their identical manifestation.

The 16th Karmapa declared on many occasions that he was undistinguished from Shamarpa in his body, speech and mind. Shamar Rinpoche recognized the 17th Karmapa Trinlay Thaye Dorje.
